A coastal park project that has been on hold for more than a decade in the Northern Governorate might finally get the go-ahead after a municipal council proposal approving the project.
The Barbar coastal park may now be included in the 2021-2022 municipality projects budget with a concerted effort made to complete the project which has been on the drawing board since 2007.
The move is being spearheaded by Northern Municipal Council’s Services Committee chairman Dr Sayed Shubbar Al Wedaei who told the GDN that area residents have been dreaming of a beachside community area for years.
“We aim to activate the procedural guarantees for including this project in our financial plans,” said Dr Al Wedaei, who is also an environmental expert.
“This project will provide a suitable location for coastal visitors to rest, socialise and exercise and it can serve Barbar and neighbouring villages.
“There has been a lot of social anxiety over the delay of implementing the project since its tender was first issued in 2007 and practical measures needed to develop the Barbar Coastal Park.
“There is a dire need to create a modern facility that is sustainable and environmentally-friendly.”
Dr Al Wedaei added that many residents were fearful that the plans would be permanently shelved after several new projects were announced to be in the pipeline.
A coastal park petition was signed by more than 450 neighbourhood residents requesting a speedy implementation of the project.Councillors unanimously approved the proposal which will now be referred to Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf for review.
