RIYADH: The British Council has released an iPad application called Sounds Right aimed at helping students of the English language learn how to differentiate their "Ps" from their "Bs" and other pronunciations.

The program contains an interactive pronunciation chart developed by the British Council that groups sounds by vowels, consonants and diphthongs complete with audio examples. The software is available on Apple's iTunes Store where it was profiled on the website's "new and noteworthy" section.

The pronunciation chart is based on a whiteboard version used by the British Council in its English-language courses given in over 100 countries. This application is the latest in a series of free language-aid softwares developed by the British Council.

"The Arabic-speaking world is experiencing phenomenal growth in the use of digital media and social networking. This new application and our Learn English range of products show how we are harnessing the growing popularity of digital media to complement classroom teaching," said Nic Humphries, British Council director for English in the Middle East and North Africa.

More than 650,000 learners worldwide visit the British Council's Learn English website each month.
