Tunisia - The National Agency for Energy Management (ANME) will distribute 400,000 energy-efficient LED bulbs in Tozeur, Djerba and Tunis from May 1, at a rate of 3 bulbs per household.

These bulbs will help reduce electricity consumption by 40%, Abdelkader Baccouche, director of energy efficiency in the building sector at ANME and coordinator of this programme told TAP.

"This initiative is part of the programme to replace 4 million incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs (PROMO-LED), targeting more than 1.2 million Tunisian households," he said.

This programme, financed by the Energy Transition Fund (FTE) to the tune of 40 million dinars, will see four phases of bulb distribution, the first of which will start in Tozeur and target 4,500 households.

Tozeur was chosen as the pilot governorate because it is an ecological region that will be home to two solar power plants by 2025.

As for the second phase, the official said that a tender will be launched this year to acquire 1.2 million bulbs to be distributed in 2023. The third and fourth phases of the project are planned for 2024 and 2025 in the remaining regions, he added.

The households that will benefit from these bulbs are among the customers of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) whose electricity consumption does not exceed 150 kilowatt/hour per month and 1800 kilowatt/hour per year.

He added that t these bulbs, whose cost varies between 5 and 4 dinars, will be distributed by ANME, STEG and the National Agency for Waste Management (ANGED), which will recycle the bulbs.

Replacing 4 million incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs will help reduce household consumption by 80%, according to Baccouche.
