Dubai Properties (DP) said on Sunday the first stage of a 1 billion dirham ($272.3 million) waterfront project at Dubai’s Business Bay will open next month, to coincide with the opening of the Dubai Water Canal.

The first stage of the Marasi Business Bay Promenade project, located 550 metres from Downtown Dubai, will compromise of several kiosks, with retail outlets expected to follow soon after, according to a press statement released on Sunday. The project will be launched to coincide with the Roads and Transport Authority’s completion of the first phase of work on infrastructure for the new water canal.

“The Business Bay landscape will be redefined with the opening of the Marasi Business Bay Promenade and the Dubai Water Canal,” DP’s Group CEO Abdulla M. Lahej was quoted as saying in a statement.

“Visitors and residents in this area, which has been known more for its commercial activities, will now have a unique venue in the heart of the city where they can enjoy a new active, urban lifestyle at the city’s next iconic fitness and leisure destination.”

Water homes with land and sea access, a new marina and a 50,000 square metre park area, an outdoor cinema and weekly markets will be included in later stages of the promenade project in the fourth quarter of 2017.

The new marina will feature five palm tree-lined ports with 1,250 berths, along with over 100 floating retail and food and beverages outlets, a group of onshore boutiques and other leisure, entertainment and business facilities. A new pier is also scheduled to be constructed by 2023.
