A workshop titled ‘Rights of the Seafarers in the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006’ began at the City Seasons Hotel Muscat on Tuesday.

The two-day workshop aims to regularise marine labour to meet all requirements to ensure the labourers’ rights according to international standards and requirements.

The workshop, being organised by the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC), began under the patronage of H E Said bin Hamdoon al Harthy, Undersecretary for Ports and Maritime Affairs.

H E Harthy said the workshop aimed to discuss the legal and technical rights of seafarers among all relevant parties, including the governmental and private authorities, ports and workers, to come up with recommendations, as well as discussing the issue of ships stranded in ports.

The workshop is being attended by specialists from the International Transport Workers’ Federation, in addition to 38 participants from various relevant bodies in the sultanate, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Administrative Affairs Council for Judiciary, Ministry of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Manpower, Omani Lawyers Association, Oman Human Rights Commission, Maritime Security Centre, General Federation of Oman Trade Unions, Omani ports and shipping agency companies and ship owners in the sultanate.
