The seventh edition of the Abu Dhabi Classics international concert series opens on October 12 at Al Ain’s Al Jahili Fort with a performance by Switzerland’s oldest symphony orchestra, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra.
The group’s 66 musicians, along with conductor James Gaffigan and soloist Nicholas Angelich, make their UAE debut with two gigs in the UAE: the first will feature Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg’s piano concerto, followed by the symphonic poem Richard Wagner wrote for his wife, Cosima, on the birth of their son, Siegfried, in 1869. This will be followed by Beethoven’s 4th Symphony.
The second concert, on October 13, will be held at Emirates Palace, where the orchestra will play Gioachino Rossini’s overture to his Grand Opera Guillaume Tell (1829), Sergei Rachmaninov’s piano concerto No 2 (1900-1901) and Brahms First Symphony (1876).
Before the second show, Dr Ronald Perlwitz, head of TCA Abu Dhabi Music Programme, will lead a talk on Brahms 1st Symphony.
Tickets for both nights start at Dh100. Dr Perlwitz’s talk is free for concert ticket holders.
