OTTAWA, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Canada said on Tuesday it wouldtake in and resettle some 5,000 Afghan refugees who had beenevacuated by the United States after the withdrawal of the lastAmerican troops after almost two decades of war.

"We're pulling out all the stops to help as many Afghans aspossible who want to make their home in Canada," saidImmigration Minister Marco Mendicino. "Over the weekend, Canadaand its allies received assurances from the Taliban that Afghancitizens with travel authorization from other countries would besafely allowed to leave Afghanistan."
