Iraq’s Ministry of Planning is planning to restart work on the stalled Ghammas district hospital project in Al-Diwaniyah Governorate soon.

Abdul-Zahra Al-Hindawi, a spokesperson for Iraq’s Ministry of Planning told Zawya Projects that the 100-bed project had achieved 45 percent completion rate before work stopped.

He said a field team sent by ministry has identified the problems behind the stalling of the project, which forms part of the Al-Diwaniyah governorate’s development programme.

Al-Hindawi said problems identified by the Ministry’s team included delays on the part of the contractor with regard to project schedule and milestones, design changes leading to increase in project costs, absence of an advisory team to address design and implementation problems as they occur, absence of a plan to provide the hospital with medical devices and equipment, connect it to national electricity grid and provide road connectivity.

He added that the Ministry plans to undertake mitigation measures for these problems in cooperation with the local government by launching a new project within the governorate’s development plan to provide power supply, paved roads, and equipment to the hospital to speed up its completion.
