A proposal that would have seen home owners being assigned space on streets in front of their home for parking their vehicles has been shot down by the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry.
Minister Essam Khalaf told the Northern Municipal Council in writing that the proposed amendments to the 1977 Buildings Law would violate laws in place governing the occupation of public roads and could cause traffic commotion in neighbourhoods.
The move proposed by technical committee chairman Abdullah Al Qubaisi in October who highlighted that frequent fights took place over parking spaces in front of homes.
“This proposal doesn’t require a study or a vision as all the facts are clear,” said Mr Al Qubaisi during the council’s weekly meeting.
“The Housing Ministry provides a single parking space per house and which house in Bahrain have you seen only has one car?”
His concerns were shared by council chairman Ahmed Al Kooheji who said that a scarcity of parking spots had led to people parking their cars on pavements and blocking roads.
He expressed concern over an increase in arguments, fights and court cases between neighbours because of the issue.
The proposal will be resubmitted by the council following further study to include pictures and detailed reports highlighting all aspects of the problem.
