The Center for Public Policy and Leadership at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has issued the UAE’s Human Development Report of 2018.

Professor Mohamed Albaili, UAEU Vice Chancellor, stressed that issuing this report in the Year of Zayed highlights the role of the founding father in laying the foundations of the UAE’s renaissance in different walks of life. The report contributes to enhancing the developmental policies and promoting leadership of the UAE Human Development value. It also contributes to achieving the UAE vision of 2021 and Abu Dhabi Vision of 2030 through focusing on vital sectors like the economy, education, health, job market, and social policies.

The report reflects the active collaboration between the UAEU Center for Public Policy and Leadership and the United Nations Development Programme. It also shows how the center actively seeks to enhance partnerships with international organizations to exchange expertise and support UAE decision-making process, contributing to achieving UAE’s leadership vision.

Issuing the report by the UAEU Center for Public Policy and Leadership is a testament that the center is keeping peace with the UAE Human Development and that it is keen on improving UAE Human Development value and sustainability to promote human life in the UAE, as aspired by the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Frode Mauring, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative a.i. to the UAE, stated that “The first United Arab Emirates’ National Human Development Report in 21 years, shows considerable progress since the last report.  The launch of the report reflects longstanding partnership covering more than four decades, between the United Nations and the United Arab Emirates.  The importance of this report lies in its contribution to place human development and people-centred policies at the forefront of the country’s policy agendas. As reported, the population has grown almost 16 times from 1975 to 2016. More people means more challenges and more opportunities. The United Arab Emirates has made remarkable progress in multiple areas including education and health. This report will be used to lay the ground and provide a strong analytical basis on different components comprising and contributing to human development.  The report results from a partnership between UAEU and UNDP.”

Dr. Mohamed Bin Huwaidin, Chair of the Political Science Department at UAEU, and the report’s technical advisor and main editor, stated that, “the UAE Human Development status has not been investigated since the issue of the first report in 1997, which was prepared by UAEU. The new report has investigated the UAE Human Development from three perspectives: education, health and the standard of living”.

The UAE Human Development Report written and reviewed by more than 12 authors and reviewers specializing in Human Development has adopted the methodology of the Untitled Nations Programme since its establishment in 1990.

The report has shown a notable improvement in the UAE Human Development performance through achieving a higher score in the Human Development Index, promoting the country to be among those with the highest Human Development values. The report has also shown that the three dimensions of education, health and the income index are the most contributors to achieving this score in the HDI.

The UAE Human Development Report referred to the women empowerment development in the UAE, narrowing the gender gap and the clear advancement of Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the HDI compared to the other Emirates.
