UAE: - An official UAE delegation headed by H.E. Dr. Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, the UAE Minister of Infrastructure Development and the Chairman of Federal Transport Authority for Land and Maritime (FTA), successfully concluded its participation at the Ministerial Session held on the sidelines of the World Maritime Day Parallel Event. The meeting was attended by key ministers from countries including Colombia, Ghana, Iran, Panama, Poland, Singapore and South Africa.

During the event, H.E. delivered the opening speech of a special roundtable session entitled, ‘Strategy to Promote global partnership.’ In his keynote, Al Nuaimi emphasized on the importance of partnerships and cooperation between countries worldwide, particularly across maritime issues and how to address challenges being faced by this sector.

The Ministerial Session covered discussions about strategies designed to promote global partnerships and regional cooperation in maritime issues. The session also tackled key issues about the maritime sector, including regional concerns and how to consolidate its position as a key player towards economic development.

Al Nuaimi said, “Our presence and participation at the Ministerial Session affirms the UAE's continuing commitment and support towards the effort to address the challenges being faced by the maritime sector while also enhancing cooperation between concerned parties in maritime issues to develop and sustain the sector. In line with this, we remain fully committed in strengthening cooperation with various organizations and institutions related to the maritime sector, especially in adopting and complying with set international standards and best practices of this field. We aim to develop a prosperous maritime sector that contributes to the development process and enhances the national economy of the UAE, based on the country's wise leadership and their vision to promote economic diversification and reinforce all vital sectors.”

“The UAE has earned key achievements and have undertaken strategic steps towards embracing sustainability and ensuring safety in the maritime sector, which in turn resulted in many important measures such as updating maritime law, enhancing the process of monitoring shipping companies, and assess the efficiency of container-handling. Our participation here today further demonstrates our keenness to promote international cooperation, which is part of our move to be at pace with the newest and advance industry trends in the UAE, the region and the rest of the world,” concluded Al Nuaimi.

The UAE Minister explained that the global maritime sector is now facing many challenges, which requires cooperation at the highest level to improve administrative guidelines and standards, develop maritime laws and increase the level of coordination among concerned countries and organizations to promote the sector and develop its activities, especially those related to maritime shipping. He added that organizing these kind of events serves as a strategic platform to discuss these timely challenges and come up with likely solutions, which can result in a vibrant and sustainable maritime sector.

The World Maritime Day Parallel Event was highlighted by the turn-over of the event flag from Columbia to South Africa, which will host the next edition of World Maritime Day in 2020.
