• New IoT platform represents launch pad for data-enabled services
  • Company showcases LiFi as an example of how light is becoming a new intelligent language with the means to connect people and convey information like never before.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting, launched its Internet of Things (IoT) platform, called Interact, today at the Water, Energy, Technology & Environment Exhibition (WETEX) 2018 in Dubai. Interact will enable professional customers to unlock the full potential of connected lighting for the IoT. The platform supports the company's strategy to deliver new data-enabled services as value expands from lighting products and systems to services.

A regional example of such a service is installed in Hamdan Bin Mohamed Smart University (HBMSU) where Interact Office enables the university to deliver new experiences and services. The software system is integrated with the university’s Building Management System (BMS) so that all the building systems work together seamlessly. HBMSU installed 600 LuxSpace luminaires from Signify that use Interact Office Indoor navigation location services to work with an app that helps wayfinding by locating the user’s position in the building and guiding them to their desired destination. Users can also easily control light and temperature levels via a personal control app.

Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western region of the emirates have also adopted the technology by upgrading the controls of 7300 street light cabinets to the Interact City platform, enabling a more effective way of remotely managing, monitoring and controlling their lighting. The system will enable optimization of street lighting performance and accurately measure energy usage in real-time, helping them reach sustainability goals, track energy use reduction and save money.

Different applications of the system are also demonstrated at the Signify booth at WETEX, with a focus on Smart City applications like landmark, sports and street lighting. The company is also demonstrating Light Fidelity (LiFi), a technology in which high quality LED lighting provides a broadband Internet connection through light waves. As the lighting company for the Internet of Things, Signify is the first global lighting company to offer LiFi-enabled luminaires from its existing office lighting portfolio.

Samir Al Aref, General Manager of Signify Middle East (excluding KSA) commented: “Our objective is to create additional value for our customers through data-enabled services. Interact will not only support our customers to improve their lighting experiences but they can also generate and upload data to the Interact IoT platform. We are excited to use WETEX as a stage to launch our innovative lighting technologies that support the sustainability goals of Dubai by offering new capabilities to unlock the extraordinary potential of light.”

Signify has already installed 29 million connected light points worldwide and plans for every new LED product it produces to be connectable by 2020. This growing number of connected light points, sensors and devices, as well as systems, can collect large volumes of data for which Interact was designed to handle. The highly secure, scalable cloud-based Interact platform uses sophisticated and modern data management and data processing capabilities, including machine learning, to bring sense to all manner of data - creating data-enabled services for customers that will deliver benefits beyond illumination.

LiFi offers two-way, high-speed wireless communication similar to WiFi. Instead of using radio signals it uses light waves to transmit data. Signify’s LiFi-enabled office lighting fixtures have a broadband connection speed of 30 Mb per second without compromising lighting quality. This is sufficient to stream simultaneously several HD quality videos while holding a video call.
