Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities president and a candidate for the role of secretary general of the World Tourism Organisation Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa met members of the diplomatic corps in Madrid as part of a tour to support her bid for the position.

Also present were Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed Alzayani and Foreign Ministry director of the organisations department Fatima Abdullah Faris Al Dhaen.

During the meeting, the attendees were introduced to Shaikha Mai’s vision and strategy, which consists of seven pillars to advance the pandemic-stricken tourism sector, with a focus on reaching the sustainable development goals of the United Nations.

The meeting also covered her plans to reactivate the various types and forms of tourism post-Covid-19, including the need to attract partnerships with the private sector.

Last night she tweeted an example of successfully securing backing, such as for the Shaikh Ebrahim Centre for Culture and Research project.

“Through the ‘Invest in Culture’ scheme I managed to secure private funding of an estimated $50 million for a major rehabilitation scheme’ in the old city of Muharraq,” she added.

Almost 30 renovated traditional houses are now open to the public and the project is helping to shape the cultural landscape of Bahrain.
