Abu Dhabi, UAE: The Department of Community Development Abu Dhabi has held the first Social Sector Retreat 2020 in Abu Dhabi on February 20th at Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island. The retreat was attended by H.E. Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development and all the Director Generals and Executives from Abu Dhabi social sector entities.

The Social Sector Retreat aligns with the Department's support for the National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031. The retreat reviewed Abu Dhabi social sector vision and strategic targets for 2030, highlighted 2019 achievements, and the efforts of different social entities aimed at ensuring good Quality of life for every member of Abu Dhabi community.

The retreat included a discussion panel with global speakers and social sector experts, including Fabrice Murtin, an economist at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Michael Green, CEO of the Social Progress Imperative.

A series of workshops also discussed current challenges facing the sector, as well as standards and measures for assessing the Quality of life. Attendees discussed initiatives that aim to elevate the Quality of the social sector's services. The Better Life Index was discussed in light of its role in improving social services for the residents of Abu Dhabi.

The retreat concluded with the approval of a set of frameworks, mechanisms, initiatives and ideas to support the social sector's goals in general, and the Department of Community Development in particular. The retreat’s outcome-focused on working with partners to systemically change the way the social sector works and foster cooperation among Abu Dhabi’s various social stakeholders.

Commenting on the retreat, H.E. Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development, said: “The retreat reflects the Department of Community Development's commitment to enhancing cooperation, coordination and the exchange of experience between social sector entities, to develop the sector and support its endeavours to build a society that embodies the values of tolerance, respect, credibility, sympathy, giving and responsibility among community groups”.

Al Khaili added that all the initiatives and projects during 2019 had the impact on the community of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi; stressing that 2020 and under the theme of Towards the next 50 years is the beginning of a new stage of success and development, and the aspirations of the sector are achieved by providing a dignified life for all who called Abu Dhabi home. The retreat is an opportunity to delve deeper into the Quality of life standards, which the Department of Community Development is constantly working to align its goals with all the UAE government plans and strategies to develop comprehensive and integrated programs and initiatives by providing a Quality of life.

The Department of Community Development is responsible for policy-making and for developing, organising and reinforcing social programmes, and coordinates with the concerned parties to monitor, track and address social trends in the Emirates of Abu Dhabi. Its mandate includes developing and implementing policies that ensure high-quality services and fair support for different social groups as well as shedding light on critical social issues. The Department is also responsible for supporting social institutions in providing effective social care services through a scientific approach and diverse social insights.
