Wearing face masks in public places has been made mandatory as part of enhanced measures to combat the Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19).

Everyone, whether sick or healthy, must wear a surgical or homemade face mask while going to public places, announced health officials at a Press conference last night.

National Taskforce for Combating Covid-19 Monitoring Committee head Lieutenant Colonel Dr Manaf Al Qahtani said this was based on the latest global research that masks will limit the spread of Covid-19.

“The decision is based on studies in the US and Asia, and recommended by the World Health Organisation.

“This is in addition to social distancing.”

However, there was no need to wear the N95 mask, said Dr Al Qahtani.

“Normal masks or ones which you can make at home are enough.

“Those who have a chronic condition and low immunity can wear the masks at home too.

“The masks must cover the nose and mouth.”

Health Minister Faeqa Al Saleh said sufficient masks will be made available, with Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed Alzayani supporting her.

They were also speaking at a Press conference held at the Crown Prince Centre for Training and Medical Research, at the BDF Hospital.

“Masks will be made available in pharmacies and other shops in co-ordination with the Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry,” said Ms Al Saleh.

“Masks can also be made at home, instructions of which are available on the ministry’s website.

“We also urge shops and businesses to disinfect their premises and to strictly follow social distancing.

“All updates and community guidelines will be made available on the Health Ministry’s website and the BeAware Bahrain app.”

Mr Alzayani said arrangements were being made to ensure the availability of the masks.

“We are working with industrial and business places to increase the availability of masks at the local level through shops that are open and others that will reopen on Thursday.
