The UAE aims to complete its Dh500 million worth Mars-simulation city "within three to four years", which will then include several human test subjects living in isolation under "brutal conditions" as they will have to produce their own food, water, energy and even oxygen.

The Mars Scientific City will be spread over 1.9million sqft and is being built to help prepare humans for future residency on the red planet. The UAE is also aiming on building an entire city on Mars by 2117.

Adnan Al Rais, the Project Manager of the Mars 2117 project, told Khaleej Times on the sidelines of the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center's Science Event that the test subjects will live under the same conditions as they would on Mars.

"Russia also carried out a similar project, where they had test subjects living in a Mars-like environment for 500 days," he said. "The Mars Scientific City is currently in the design phase. The construction can be done quickly but we want to get all the details right."
