Trade between Dubai and the United Kingdom (UK) reached an estimated 21.5 billion UAE dirhams ($5.8 billion) in 2020, making the British one of the emirate’s biggest trade partners, a top official said on Sunday.

During the year, imports reached 16.3 billion UAE dirhams, while exports and re-exports totalled 1.6 billion and 3.6 billion, respectively.

Ahmed Mahboob Musabih, Dubai Customs director general, who shared the information during an online meeting, said the strong relations between the UK and the UAE resulted in “fruitful mutual trade”.

He said Dubai Customs and UK authorities also helped in the campaign against the illegal trade of goods, particularly counterfeit tobacco products.

“The UK and Dubai have seized 198 million cigarettes and 122 tonnes of illegitimate tobacco products that were to be transported to the UK,” he said.

Bill Williamson, director of British Customs, said they would like to enhance international efforts related to “legitimate trade” and deepen “mutual cooperation”.

“Dubai Customs has long and outstanding experience that will help us facilitate trade and build advanced customs systems. Dubai Customs and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) share important relations. The work undertaken by the fiscal crime liaison officers based in Dubai is important, as we seek ways in which to deepen our mutual cooperation further,” he said.
