MANAMA: A Bahraini shipping company has become the first to launch operations in Antarctica by handling a private jet.

Kanoo Shipping, one of the largest shipping agencies in the region and a fully owned business of Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo Group (YBA Kanoo), has launched operations in Antarctica through its office in South Africa.

Antarctic operations began by handling the private jet Dassault Falcon 7X and the operation is based in Cape Town which is the preferred gateway for the DROMLAN community.

DROMLAND stands for the Dronning Maud Land Air Network Project which is a co-ordinated project between 11 countries with bases in Queen Maud Land in Norway to create a co-ordinated logistics service to reduce costs.

These countries are South Africa, Belgium, Finland, Germany, India, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the UK.

“It is not often that a ship agent can possibly claim to be the first on a continent – but Kanoo Shipping have put in a claim following the handling of the first of this year’s flights supporting various Antarctic research bases,” said Kanoo Shipping divisional chief executive Jonathan Bygrave.

“We have developed a great relationship with many of the polar research organisations worldwide to support both their flights, personnel and equipment as well as their vessels through our Kanoo Shipping operation based in Cape Town.”

“The world is no longer big enough.”

As winners of the 2018 and 2019 Ship Agent of the Year in Seatrade Maritime Awards, Kanoo Shipping provides a range of services to support national bases in Antarctica.

They have commenced their Antarctic season by providing a range of services to support these bases which include support for 10 to 12 flights and ship agency services for the general cargo vessels that sail to the ice shelf every year.
