Misr Italia Properties will introduce the 15-minute city concept where everything that residents need is located within a 15-minute travel distance by foot or bike in its ongoing Il Bosco City project in New Cairo.
Developed by Sorbonne University professor Carlos Moreno, 15-minute city concept got worldwide attention when Mayor Anne Hidalgo of Paris made it a key pillar of her 2020 re-election campaign.
Company CEO Mohamed Hany El-Assal told Zawya Projects that the project was designed keeping walkability and ease of access to educational, sports, lifestyle, shopping, and medical services.
He added that the 15-minute concept would be applied to all phases of Il BOSCO City.
“Getting workplaces, stores and homes closer helps get rid of pollution and enables the construction of parks, bicycle paths, sports activities and entertainment centres, to allow residents to carry out their daily activities outside their homes, in safe streets and squares,” he said.
The Misr Italia CEO pointed out neighbourhoods with pedestrian streets had been norm before cars and zoning laws spread and divided cities in the 20th century.
The 15-minute city concept caught the imagination of urban planners when COVID-10 lockdowns shuttered city centres, and people were forced to look for their needs within their neighbourhoods, according to a February 2021 report by the BBC.
El-Assal also added that Il Bosco City is equipped with smart city technologies such as keyless entry, motion sensors, advanced security systems and modern energy-efficient appliances.
He said the 15-minute city concept would be rolled out in other projects after taking customer requirements into consideration.
The 22 billion Egyptian pounds Il Bosco City is spread over an area of more than 268 acres in Mostakbal City.
