Tunisia - The Gafsa Phosphates Company (CPG) expects the production of 5.6 million tonnes of commercial phosphate in 2023 to break with the slow pace of production last decade, during which the average output did not exceed 3.5 million tonnes.

The CPG's objective is to achieve a monthly production volume equivalent to 400,000 tonnes in the various units spread across the delegations of Metlaoui, M'dhilla, Om laârayes and Redeyef.

"This is an achievable goal, assuming that all units are operating at full capacity and provided to solve problems related to the transport of phosphate," sources of the CPG told TAP.

Last week saw the resumption of activities at the site of Om Laarayes, after a year of interruption of work because of repeated sit-ins in a unit where annual production is estimated at 600,000 tonnes.

The company is also required to achieve its production programme by strengthening its own capacity to transport raw phosphate from the mines to the production units for processing before shippint it to chemical fertiliser manufacturers.

An amount of 60 million dinars has been allocated for this purpose to purchase new equipment and trucks, said a source from the CPG.
