The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) pioneered the first Apple Professional Developer (APD) Workshop for faculty members of the three Federal Institutions in the UAE to assist with the roll-out of technology based learning across all colleges within the universities. The workshop involved an intensive two day blended-learning course for leaders and coaches of professional development in teaching with technology, and was conducted by Gilbert Ho, Global Education Team, Apple.
Dr. Jörg Waltje, Director of the CETL, UAEU points out, "Some of our instructors are already engaged in creating iBooks and other multi-media materials for their classes. Having certified and authorized Apple Professional Developers on campus will help us immensely to facilitate sharing and coaching among teachers. This spring, CETL will intensify its work with colleges and departments on applicable pedagogy, iPad training, and iBook authoring for key courses. This workshop has helped to show us how to integrate Apple products into the curriculum and overall student environment for a richer learning and teaching experience."
Sarah Whittaker, Program Chair and Supervisor of the Foundations Program, HCT Women's College in RAK, said "This workshop has helped me to rethink how to coach the teams that will be implementing and using the new technology at HCT. This workshop is different from the other workshops we have attended as it is more focused on the coaching aspect and envisioning the future of technology in the classroom. It also highlighted ways to get the teachers to think about how they want to use the new technology and to realize the benefits for both the teachers and the students.
Troy Priest, Curriculum Supervisor of the Academic Bridge Program, Zayed University, stated, "This workshop was extremely beneficial as it is tailored specifically to the teachers need and wants. The teachers continue to try and find more innovative ways of teaching in the classroom and engaging the students."
A trial using technology based learning was initially implemented for foundation or remedial students at all three Federal Universities and following on from its success and the feedback received from the students, the universities have decided to proceed with the roll-out across all colleges and departments.
