Teams from Spain, China and Germany Win Top Awards for Best Smart Card Innovations Based on Java Card Technology

PARIS - SchlumbergerSema, a business unit of Schlumberger Limited, awarded the team from the University of Malaga, Spain, the gold prize in the e-gate Open 2002 contest, which was hosted in association with Sun Microsystems and STMicroelectronics. Teams from Beihang University, China, and the University of Applied Science and Arts Hannover, Germany, won the silver and bronze prizes, respectively.

The e-gate Open 2002 contest challenged teams of developers from all over the world to stimulate innovation in Java Card technology-based e-business applications using SchlumbergerSema e-gate USB smart cards. Potential topics included business-to-consumer applications, as well as solutions for accessing online services, electronic signatures, digital identity, e-transactions and e-voting. Around 100 projects were submitted from more than 20 countries across the world. The jury, which was made up of key IT and e-business leaders, selected the winning projects based on their innovation, marketing appeal, ease of implementation, user-friendliness, compactness, cost-effectiveness, security and business potential.

The gold prize winning team from the University of Malaga, Spain, developed a system called EC-gate, a digital rights management tool that enables users to enforce access control policies, copyright agreements, payments and other digital objects in a distributed environment. The product is so versatile it will be able to offer a safe payment alternative to credit card-based systems for all Internet users in the future.

The second prize, won by a team from the School of Computing at Beihang University, China is a product called E-genius. The smart card is an integrated multi-device tool for saving and browsing real time information that is compatible with all computers that have a USB port. All eGenius applications are written in the Java programming language, which enables complete interoperability.

The third team, from the University of Applied Science and Arts in Hannover, Germany, developed a product called the Open Learning Platform. This integrated e-learning portal supports teaching and learning in university departments, enabling the user to have access to e-learning services via the Internet, register for exams and access confidential information, such as exam results, after obtaining secure authentication.

"It is fantastic to see such a wide breadth of new ideas and products being developed using USB smart cards, such as the Java Card technology-based SchlumbergerSema Cyberflex e-gate card," said Pearl Chu, vice president, Marketing, Cards, SchlumbergerSema. "The three winners were chosen because their entries showed a real understanding of how the use of smart card technology on the Java Card platform can have a positive affect on every day life."
