Dubai: It was not just the torrential rain that had Dubai abuzz on Wednesday evening… At the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, 100 boss ladies, change-makers, business leaders and influencers braved the weather and ensuing transportation crisis to come together and honor the mission and accomplishments of When Women Win. The select guest list included thought-leaders, CEOs, partners and business owners from corporations around Dubai – from Oliver Wyman to Jumeirah to Careem to Barclays to Google to MBC, and many more. Rana invited her guests to toast the successes of the women in our presence, to reflect on the importance of advancing women in the workplace and to recognize that there is still much work to be done.
There was more than a little mystery surrounding last night’s adventure… First, Abra Cards created beautiful 3D invitations that were hand-delivered to the guests by Joi, along with a charming bouquet of white roses. All that the guests gleaned from the invitation was the why and the when… Second, dedicated Careem cars picked up the guests at 18.45 on the day of the event (or as close to that as they could get in the rain!) to take them to the undisclosed location. Once in the car, guests were greeted with a special When Women Win compilation and a welcome message from Rana Nawas, as well as access to the password-protected guest list. Upon arrival at the mystery destination, the guests were escorted one by one by umbrella to the glass bowl party venue where mixing and mingling ensued. “Here are 100 women who support women – don’t let anyone tell you they don’t exist” said Rana Nawas about the friends and colleagues who attended this exclusive gathering.
The power evening began with a glass of bubbly on arrival and very quickly developed into a symphony of high-energy conversations about women, business, parity, podcasts and everything in between. New connections were made and old ones were deepened. As the guests stepped off the red carpet, they were treated to trays of delectable canapés by Jumeirah’s finest chefs – and the bubbles kept on flowing. Amid paparazzi flashbulbs in front of the press wall, Rana Nawas took the stage to welcome the guests to the event and invite the Title Sponsors to share with the gathering how they are helping women win within their organizations and why they decided to support When Women Win 50 (#www50).
“Gender parity in the Middle East is improving, with the United Arab Emirates leading the region in terms of the number of women in ministerial and managerial positions. Challenges however still exist when it comes to supporting family responsibilities and changing unconscious biases in workplace culture. As an organization, we are committed more than ever to supporting female empowerment within the workplace and constantly working towards a balanced organization, especially in the region.” - Neil Reid, Senior Partner, Oliver Wyman
“Hosting Rana’s milestone event was such a great way to close off a month off celebrating women working in Jumeirah and the countless women staying in our hotels. While International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day provide are opportune times to recognize women and all the they do, every day is a special day for women working in and visiting Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts. It was an honor to be part of such a powerful event and we look forward to working with likeminded businesses such as When Women Win in the future.” - Tünde Nagy, Market Director of Sales – Dubai, Jumeirah Group
"In a region where women are faced with lower political and economic participation, we want to do our part in achieving gender equality for all, but we still have a lot of work to do to change perceptions, empower women in the region and ensure gender equality for future generations. We at Careem are committed to empowering women across all 15 countries where we exist through our vision of reaching 20,000 female captains by 2020, ensuring equal pay and career opportunities in our workplace and by supporting the next generation of women leaders."- Gheed Elmakkaoui, General Manager, Careem UAE
Rana Nawas went on to involve the audience in her future plans for When Women Win and announce that the podcast will be available to all Emirates Airlines passengers on the ICE system as of May 19th 2019. She ended with a call to action for the audience to focus on what they each could do to advance women in the workplace.
“When Women Win is not the end game - it’s only the beginning. Let’s celebrate the impact we’ve had so far, but also keep our eye on the goal. The goal is gender parity at all levels - especially at the top. So let’s continue to support women directly, to support men who support women, and support companies that support women - like every company that has contributed to this event. Thank you.”
