Annual achievements across medical, operational, community, and education and training sectors for SEHA owned and operated hospital
Abu Dhabi, 16 April 2014: Mafraq Hospital, owned and operated by the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), today announced a series of milestones achieved by the hospital and its staff in 2013 across operational, medical, environmental, educational and community activities. The hospital's achievements during the year including the successful diagnosis of a patient suffering from a very rare medical condition; the launch of the first waste recycling initiative at a SEHA facility; the successful streamlining of operations with Al Rahba Hospital; and the launch of more than 17 community health campaigns.
Medical milestones for 2013 included the diagnosis in April by the cardiac team of a patient suffering from the very rare Fabry's disease, a genetic illness which affects as few as one in 140,000 people. Other significant medical advances included a 49 per cent reduction in major amputations or death cause by diabetic foot complications for the Vascular department, the first internal audit of locally collected data on positive breast biopsies, and the first use of an injectable substance known as Definity which helps to enhance the resolution and definition of Echocardiology images. In addition, Mafraq Hospital was the only SEHA establishment to perform Renal Guard Therapy, to prevent acute kidney failure. Also for renal patients, a SEHA dialysis pharmacy managed by Mafraq Hospital opened in April 2013, making securing and prescriptions much simpler for dialysis patients.
The hospital also focused its efforts on community wellbeing throughout the year, with a number of public health campaigns and initiatives. These included bone and joint screening sessions, breast cancer awareness as part of the ongoing women's health campaign Ana Rosa, a men's health campaign, World Kidney Day activities, the Hamaya campaign to reduce the incidence of burns especially among children, healthy eating and healthy lunchbox campaign, colon cancer awareness, and a urology campaign. For its staff, two additional campaigns were run - including the 'We Care' Mafraq Hospital ambassador programme and a 'Culture of Safety' campaign designed to enhance quality standards.
In addition, publications developed designed and produced by the Hospital to help promote better health and disease awareness include the quarterly community magazine Tabibi, the bi-monthly Practice magazine for doctors and healthcare professionals, and bi-weekly internal newsletter Connect which launched in March.
Lee Huntley, CEO at Mafraq Hospital said: "It has been a stellar year for all of the team at Mafraq Hospital. We have worked to provide better patient care, to enhance and streamline our operations, and to ensure that our staff is educated about the latest advances in their respective medical fields. On the momentum gained during a very successful 2013, we will continue to strive to provide even better care for our communities in 2014; which means better services, better treatment and better environments."
Educational and training highlights during the last year include the introduction of SEHA's first UAE leadership council in October, the management of the 4th annual Abu Dhabi Rheumatology Review Course attracting 325 delegates of which a quarter came from outside the GCC, and a scientific conference in Cardiovascular Medicine in Etihad Towers which 200 delegates attended. Other successes included a record number of abstracts submitted to the SEHA Research Conference by teams and individuals at the hospital, Mafraq Hospital's Clinical Dietetics being chosen as a training centre for students from the UAE University in Al Ain, and a three day training system for UAE nationals in secretarial positions. It is worth mentioning that Mafraq Hospital has collaborated with 37 consultants across rare specialties to attend to SEHA's network.
The hospital also collected its second Sheikh Khalifa Clinical Excellence Award in four years this September, recognizing its commitment to excellence.
To enhance the environment, not only did Mafraq Hospital become the first SEHA establishment to introduce a waste recycling programme as part of its 'Go Green' Initiative in June but the hospital itself also saw improvements and enhancements including the welcome addition of a flower shop at the hospital in May 2013.
