Dubai, UAE - Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus and WILO Middle East FZE, a premium, global supplier in building services and water management, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will see students from the Engineering and Physical Sciences School benefit from hands on knowhow of world-class water management pumps and systems.

The MoU will see the supply and installation of WILO pumps in the Fluid Mechanics section of the Heriot-Watt Mechanical Engineering Laboratory - which will be known as the dedicated WILO Pump Laboratory.

The laboratory will give students the opportunity of getting practical training on various pumps that have been proven to be pioneering innovations in the water management industry. Additionally, the agreement will see WILO sponsor student competitions in the coming year, in which a paid internship at the company will be the first prize.

Headquartered in Dortmund, Germany, WILO's expertise has offered solutions designed to meet the complex requirements involved in the production of potable water, water purification, water pumping, water treatment and waste water disposal since 1872. Today, WILO is one of the world's leading manufacturers of high-tech pumps with over 60 production sites and distribution companies and more than 7,000 employees worldwide.

"At WILO, one of our five core values is 'sustainable and responsible' and key to this is ensuring that resources are preserved for the future and that our children will have the same opportunities tomorrow that we have today. Over the past 140 years that we have been operating worldwide, we have had the opportunity to work with some of the brightest and most innovative engineers in the world. I believe it is our duty to give back to the community and ensure that this tradition continues," concluded Dr. Amer Mokbel Managing Director - Wilo Middle East FZE.

"Partnerships with commercial leaders in a wide range of fields have helped Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus to differentiate itself and its students. With Heriot-Watt University's heritage in engineering, technology and innovation, we hope to develop a new, multicultural generation of engineering experts and it is thanks to the forward thinking of organisations such as WILO that we can help to shape sustainable and skilled economies," said Professor Ammar Kaka, Head of Dubai Campus.

The MoU also ensures that students will visit WILO's site in Dubai, as well as its primary customers in the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, experts from the company will run technical educational sessions and workshops for students of the University, and WILO will also provide a variety of other internships in different fields such as Mechanical Engineering, Marketing, and Accounting.

Dr. Mehdi Nazarinia, Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering - Fluid Mechanics/Energy at Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus, who took up the first initiative with WILO, commented on the event saying "This is another example of the University tying up with industry leaders to use cutting edge technology and equipment to educate and train our students. The agreement will allow the company to impart its expertise to students based in the United Arab Emirates and who plan careers in the Mechanical Engineering fields. It is a particular milestone for the University and the opportunities this will provide students is exceptional".

Students of the University will be invited to participate in seminars and exhibitions in which the company is participating and WILO will also sponsor a Mechanical Engineering student to study at their academy in Germany.
