The Abu Dhabi City Municipality – The Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM) has carried out a series of campaigns against random posters and adverts in streets, lighting poles, bus stops, all public and private facilities, and roundabouts. The geographical scope of the campaigns included Abu Dhabi City and outskirts and targeted widespread adverts on streets without the authorisation of the competent authorities.
Such practices distort the general appearance of the city, whether individual or companies adverts, institutions, and other forms of adverts. The campaign was accompanied by awareness-raising campaigns on social media, streets, and through educative leaflets that targeted combating casual adverts and maintaining the aesthetic appearance of the city.
The campaigns stem from the keenness of the Department of Urban Planning and Municipalities - Abu Dhabi City Municipality to protect the urban appearance of cities and suburbs from all sorts of distortions and reiterates the importance of abiding by laws and regulations of using public facilities, streets and roundabouts by the public. It also highlighted the importance of obtaining official approval and licenses from the relevant institutions and authorities.
Adverts have to be licensed by the competent authorities. The Department of Urban Planning and Municipalities - Abu Dhabi City Municipality urged the public to contribute towards preserving the general appearance of cities, promoting values of social responsibility, and supporting the Municipal efforts in preserving the urban appearance of streets, buildings and public and private facilities.
In 2018 so far, the Abu Dhabi City Municipality issued 717 warnings and 33 offences against the unlicensed posters and adverts and removed 33 unlicensed adverts.
The Abu Dhabi City Municipality has taken measures aimed at expanding the monitoring of this phenomenon. These numbers illustrate the high number of warnings and offences being served, in an earnest effort to put an end to this phenomenon that distorts the city and pollutes the environment. The number of warnings and offences in the first quarter of this year amounted to 214 warnings and offences, 220 in the second quarter, whereas the third quarter has seen 283 warnings and offences.
In the future, the Abu Dhabi City Municipality will seek to raise awareness through social media platforms, awareness-raising lectures in residential neighbourhoods (Majalis) and community forums. Besides that, it will continue promoting values of social responsibility and engaging the public in achieving the vision of the Abu Dhabi Government.
The Abu Dhabi City Municipality will take legal actions against the publishers of these adverts, and posters. Offences range from AED1,000 to AED10,000 according to the General Appearance Law No. (2/2012) and the Preservation of the Public Places Regulation.
The Abu Dhabi City Municipality encouraged the public to comply with the requirements of installing posters and adverts on the streets and obtain permits needed to avoid offences. The Abu Dhabi City Municipality is keen to strengthen partnership and cooperation with the community to protect the public facilities and the urban appearance of cities.
