Muscat: The mortal remains of Indian nationals who have died in Oman can still be sent home, the ambassador of India to Oman has said.

However, those who have died from COVID-19 will not be repatriated back to India.

“We are still sending the bodies of Indian nationals who have died in Oman back to India,” said Ambassador Munu Mahawar. “There were a few things that needed to be sorted out with regards to this, but yes, these will be cleared up soon. However, there is no restriction of repatriating the bodies of Indian citizens to India.”

“This is only in the case, however, of Indians who have died due to non-COVID related reasons,” he added. “It is not encouraged, however, to repatriate the bodies of Indians who have expired due to COVID-19.”

The ambassador also added that when it came to transporting those Indian citizens in the Gulf countries who wished to return home, discussions with the authorities were ongoing, with an official declaration to be made in this context, whenever a decision on the same had been taken.

“We will disseminate this information accordingly, so I would ask people who have enquiries about flying home during this time to wait for official updates,” added Mahawar.
