Direct commercial and private passenger flights from India to Canada will remain suspended until late next month due to the risk of COVID-19, the Transport Canada has confirmed.

“After reviewing public health data, we have decided to extend the direct flight ban between Canada and India until September 21st, 2021,” said Omar Alghabra, Minister of Transport on Twitter. Exempted from the ban are cargo operations, medical transfers and military flights.

In a statement, the ministry said they will be working closely with the government of India and aviation operators to ensure appropriate procedures are put in place, to enable a safe return of direct flights as soon as conditions allow.

“While Canada continues to trend in the right direction, the epidemiological situation and vaccination coverage is not the same around the world. The government of Canada continues to advise Canadians to avoid non-essential travel outside of Canada – international travel increases the risk of exposure to COVID-19 and its variants, as well as of spreading it to others,” the ministry said.

The ban first took effect on April 22 and has been extended several times.

India is one of the biggest markets for many airlines, including those based in the UAE.

The UAE announced last week the lifting of the ban on transit flights from India, as well as Pakistan.
