The risk of data breaches in companies around the world has increased, warned cloud security firm Trend Micro.

In its latest Cyber Risk Index (CRI), the firm found that the number of enterprises reporting cyber-attacks that compromised networks, systems or data has gone up in the last year. Findings also indicate an “elevated risk” of attacks for businesses in the next 12 months.

The biannual study found that 80 percent of global organisations think they are likely to experience a data breach that impacts customer data in the next 12 months.

About 86 percent of those included in the study also said they’re “very likely” to suffer serious cyber-attacks in the next 12 months, compared to 83 percent in the previous report.

The risk index also found that 24 percent suffered cyber-attacks that infiltrated networks or systems, up by one percent from the previous report.

The percentage of firms experiencing breaches of information assets was up by two percent to 21 percent, and a fifth (20 percent) said they had experienced breaches of customer data, up from 17 percent previously.

The report found that organisations have ranked the top three negative consequences of an attack as customer churn, lost intellectual property (IP) and critical infrastructure damage or disruption.
