The Dubai Police's innovations lab is working on 11 special devices and methods to reduce and prevent crimes in the emirate.
These are particularly designed for gold and jewellery shops and money exchanges, to deter robberies happening at these places.
Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs at Dubai Police, pointed out that Dubai alone has over 3,000 gold and jewellery stores, with stocks worth millions of dirhams. They require the latest technologies to deter even the smartest robbers, who use hi-tech methods to steal these days.
He said the innovations lab has named a couple of its projects - which are first-of-its-kind crime-prevention innovations in the world - 'Scout' and 'Next Step'.
Among other things, the Dubai Police's Anti-Crime Department has also introduced a highly secure safe deposit box, for use in gold jewellery shops and money exchange offices, to store money and valuables. Maj-Gen Al Mansouri said the lab even conducted an explosives test on the safe, worth Dh35,000, which it passed with flying colours: the explosives did not manage to break it open.
Other unique security inventions include the 'Kaba lock' and unbreakable Solix lockers, the keys of which cannot be duplicated. In addition, if anyone tries to break open the lockers, it releases a thick smoke, acting as an alert mechanism along with an SOS alarm. The smoke is released in just 3 seconds and can block visibility in record time without harming the person inhaling it.
Another innovation, a smart money box called 'Maktoen' can be used to transport money and precious items. Priced between Dh3,000 to Dh45,000 depending on the model, it comes with a hi-tech system and electronic locks and can scramble its own security features in the event of an attack or break-in. Also equipped with a tracking feature via a microchip, the smart box can give off warning alarms and also heat up its handle automatically in the case of a robbery, to ward off the attackers. In addition, it can also be remote-opened from a distance.
Brigadier Salem Al Rumaithi, director of the General Department of Criminal and Investigation at the Dubai Police, said the innovations lab has also developed a 32mm bulletproof, unbreakable glass, ranging from 2.4 metres to 4.5 metres in size. These are again meant for gold and jewellery stores and money exchanges, for use in window display areas.
Brigadier Al Rumaithi pointed out that a particularly special invention is the 'City Guard', designed to prevent thefts, which can be used to protect houses, warehouses, shops and alert security personnel guarding these places.
The official also said that the Dubai Police has prepared a proposal to develop security procedures in gold and jewellery shops, money exchanges and other outlets that are at higher theft-risk, and will share this study with the owners.
