The Saudi authorities yesterday unveiled a new system for management of trucks crossing King Fahad Causeway.

The Saudi Unified Electronic Export and Import Platform launched the new service on an experimental basis, in co-operation with the King Fahad Causeway Authority (KFCA).

The initiative aims at regulating procedures for truck clearance on the Saudi side of the causeway.

Owners of trucks will have to book in advance to be allowed to cross the bridge, which would slash clearance procedures to a few minutes, reduce the import and export costs and step up security control.

KFCA director-general Emad Ibrahim Al Muhaisan announced at a Press conference details of the new system which will contribute to fast-tracking the flow of loaded trucks and enhance operational efficiency.

He said that the new electronic booking system will bolster the Saudi vision and provide complementary services that meet the developments needs of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, and keep abreast of domestic and international developments.

He said that around 30 million passengers have so far crossed the strategic 25km bridge, on the basis of 80,000 on average daily and around 120,000 during the weekends.

Mr Al Mohaisan earlier met Bahrain Customs president and KFCA deputy chairman Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa to discuss the system which would increase the volume of trade exchange.

He unveiled KFCA’s plan to expand the clearance procedures section to ensure smoother flow of vehicles and trucks as well as reduce waiting times.

He added that details of the pilot project would be announced soon.

Saudi Electronic Info Exchange Company (Tabadul) chief executive Abdulaziz Al Shamsi said that the online booking system would be expanded gradually to include all border entry points.
