Dubai: The sixth heat of the traditional dhow sailing race in the 22 feet category will be held today off the Mina Seyahi harbour at 4pm. Altogether 30-odd boats are to participate in the second last heat of the season.
The last five heats witnessed a spectacular display of skill and tactic. Dhows sailed on the serene waters of the Arabian Sea along the Jumeirah coast, with courses set by Saeed Hareb, Managing Director of Dubai International Marine Club, organiser of a season full of watersport events.
The organisers strictly enforce the mandatory life-jackets, given the extreme sailing conditions. This is the most dreaded race of the three categories of traditional dhow sailing, because of the Al Khayour turn buoy.
Steady sailing
The 22 feet dhows are known for their steady sailing along a straight course, but not when it comes to turning around the turn buoy.
The heats for what is the smallest of traditional dhows mark the opening of the season. Fierce competition will be seen between the top three boats as all are vying for the overall championship.
Toufan, skippered by Ahmad Saeed Al Rumaithi , is in the lead at the moment with 10 points from the five heats held so far - way ahead of Sultan Saeed Hareb in Shamardal.
Close contenders are those who have tied and will fight for survival in the match race. Muzahem, Al Adeed, Al Zeeb, Al Alawi and Heyaf will fight each other for the top honours in that race.
