Within the framework of the project aiming at rehabilitating a main tourist track in the ancient Medina of Tunis (old town), the Municipality has organised a field visit from the Kasbah to the heart of the Medina.

Representatives of the local press toured the new track, accompanied by Mr Abbes Mohsen the Mayor of Tunis and Mr Zoubeir Lasram the architect in charge of the rehabilitation project.

Work on the project started in July 2008;  its  total cost amounts to some 3,7 million dinars , 2,5 million of which were provided by the municipality and 1,2 million by urban services enterprises.

The track covers a one kilometre area stretching from the Zitouna Great Mosque and up to the Sidi Ibrahim Riahi Street through the streets of Sidi Ben Arous, El Bacha and Hafsia.

Ranked by UNESCO among the 7 great monuments in the world, and one of Tunisia's 470 historical monuments, the ancient Medina of Tunis is especially targeted by projects involving heritage preservation.

In an interview to TUNISIAONLINENEWS, Mr Mohsen Abbes said that the project aims at further boosting activities in the old town, as well as being a source of attraction for citizens to strengthen their bond with their city. He added that the project will also enhance the richness and diversity of the capital's Arab and Islamic architecture.
