Muscat - The Rural Areas Electricity Co (Raeco) will source engineering material from Saudi Arabia-based National Contracting Co (NCC) to set up a 132kV transmission network in Musandam.

An agreement to this effect was signed on Monday between Eng Nabil al Ghassani, chairman of Raeco, and Abdullah al Brahim, executive director for engineering and construction, NCC.

"The total project cost is estimated to be around RO37mn. The 132kV transmission network project will provide electricity to meet the needs of the Musandam governorate by connecting wilayats such as Bakha, Hasib and Daba. This follows an announcement by the government to provide gas for Musandam and the green light to the company to use gas in power production," said Eng Hamad al Magdheri, CEO of Raeco.

The network will link the Tabian station to the new main transformer station in Khasab state, in Mahasi district. The line will be 18km long, including the main new network.

Maghderi added that the company will use international methods to employ gas for the project and would forgo the use of diesel.

"We seek to provide continuous, quality electricity to the entire Musandam region with an eye on environmental protection. For this we would move from diesel to gas to produce the necessary power," added Magdheri.
