Doha: Akbar Al Baker, CEO, Qatar Airways, has  announced details of a new scheduled service from Edinburgh to Doha to be launched on May 28.

The new addition to the airline's route map will significantly reduce journey time for those travelling from Edinburgh to destinations around the world.

"The start of services from Edinburgh to Doha not only offers travellers from the Scottish capital access to the Middle East in under seven hours, but also a quicker total journey time to other popular destinations in Asia, India and Australasia," said Al Baker. "We are delighted to confirm the Boeing 787 will operate on this important new route and are sure that not only will this benefit the market in Scotland, but also attract significant business and trade links for those wishing to travel to Edinburgh from all corners of the world."

With smooth and frequent connection times in Doha, passengers from Edinburgh will be able to arrive at their final destination -- Doha in the Middle East or further afield -- without the need for any domestic transfers within the UK. The route is not only the first for Edinburgh to the Middle East, but will also be the country's first scheduled service on one of the world's newest aircraft, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Renowned for its five-star service, the airline will fly the aircraft on this route, which will enable passengers to experience the latest in international air travel design and comfort.

Flying direct to and from Edinburgh, the Dreamliner has a two-cabin configuration, comprising 22 seats in Business Class and 232 in Economy Class with a high standard of comfort on board, including individual 10.5-inch TV screens on all Economy Class seats and a full complimentary food and beverage service.

During a visit to Scotland, Al Baker met Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond, and discussed the launch and Scotland's potential growth prospects. He said  Scotland's tourism industry, along with infrastructure developments and potential business opportunities were key factors leading to the airline's decision to begin flying there. Al Baker also met the Lord Provost, The Right Honorable Donald Wilson, and Malcolm Roughead OBE, Chief Executive of Visit Scotland.
