DUBAI, Nov 15 (KUNA) -- Kuwait called here on Wednesday for making use of modern ways and benefiting from the experiences of advanced countries in treating waste and solving environment problems.
During their participation in a symposium on "environment challenges and hazards" the Kuwaiti officials underscored the importance of adopting the most modern scientific and technological ways to address the environment challenges.
The symposium attracted mayors of Arab cities, environment officials and academicians who probed the best ways for treating wastes especially the hazardous waste.
Chief of the Geology Department, Kuwait University, Dr Muhammad al-Saraawi briefed the symposium on the experience of his country in treating and recycling wastes.
"The Kuwaiti government allocated KD 3 million for development of waste dumps that consume up to 750 square meters of virgin land a day," he said.
H.H. the Amir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jabir al-Sabah instructed the cabinet, the Environment Public Authority, the Public Authority for Industry and the Kuwait municipality to study the future plan for treating all kinds of wastes, al-Saraawi told KUNA.
The symposium discussed a range of environment issues and ways of duplicating the experiences of advanced countries in recycling wastes and protecting environment, said member of Kuwait municipality Zeine Al-Azemi.
Al-Azemi underlined the role of mass media in upgrading public awareness on ways for environment protection.
Director of Government Relations Department of Al-Ahmadi governorate Sheikh Hamed Ibrahim said he was attending the inauguration of the Environment Centre of the Arab Cities on behalf of Al-Ahmadi Governor Dr. Ibrahim Al-Duaij Al-Sabah.
The symposium's recommendations will be referred to Al-Ahmadi Governor to decide on ways to apply them to the environment in Kuwait, Ibrahim told KUNA.
The Dubai-based ECAC hosted the symposium as its first activity and concluded it Wednesday afternoon.
