Muscat: Citizens and expatriates can renew their driving licence now electronically, starting from Sunday, July 12.

A statement issued online by the Royal Oman Police (ROP) said, ”The Royal Oman Police announces that citizens and residents can renew their expired driving licence electronically through the police website via smartphones from Sunday, July 12, 2020.”

An ROP official while talking to the Times of Oman exclusively, said: "There is an electronic authentication feature of the civil card activated from the service centres that allow the card data to be used electronically."

“In smartphones, a person needs to go to the mobile service provider and request a change of chip, smart card, to comply with the PKI electronic certification system if it is not compatible,” he added.

“There is a necessity of activating the electronic certification service (PKI) and storing the result of eye examination in the ROP link,” the statement added.

He added, "The result of the eye test should be stored electronically by the optical centres to be forwarded to the Royal Oman Police electronically. For that, one has to give their civil ID to the optical centres to get connected to the ROP website.”
