The Bahrain Monetary Agency (BMA) has issued a medal and a coin, to commemorate the Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix, to be held on April 2-4. A silver medal and a 100 fils commemorative coin have been minted to mark Bahrain’s debut on the Formula One calendar.

The coin, which is not for circulation, bears the words ‘1st Bahrain Grand Prix 2004’, along with the logo of the Bahrain International Circuit and ‘Kingdom of Bahrain’. The other side of the coin bears its denomination. The size and weight of the special coin is the same as that of an ordinary 100 fils coin, which weighs 6 gm and has a diameter of 24mm and thickness of 1.9mm.

A total of 30,000 F1 coins, in presentation packs, have been minted. The commemorative medal bears the words ‘Kingdom of Bahrain’, as well as the Kingdom’s crest embossed on a background resembling the chequered flag, which is traditionally waved as winners cross the finish line. The other side of the medal bears an image of the Sakhir Tower along with the event’s date ‘04.04.04’. The silver medal is of 99.9% purity, with a circular band of gold plating on both sides. It weighs 31 gm and has a diameter of 36mm and thickness of 2mm. A total of 500 medals have been minted. They come in a presentation box and can be purchased from BMA’s Currency Issue Directorate, at a cost of BD25 each.

“The upcoming F1 Grand Prix in Bahrain is a major event in Bahrain’s contemporary history. It is also a sporting precedent not just for Bahrain but for the region,” said Farid Jassim Zubari, Director, Currency Issue, at the BMA. “The BMA is proud to be part of the unprecedented national effort to make the upcoming event a memorable one.”
