DUBAI (Zawya Dow Jones)--Abu Dhabi Airports Co., or Adac, said Tuesday six groups of local and international construction firms had submitted bids for the contract to build a new terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport aimed at helping manage growing air traffic in the emirate.

Adac, in an emailed statement, said six consortia had submitted bids for the contract to build the new Midfield Terminal Building, which will become the future home of national carrier Etihad Airways, including Germany's Hochtief; Bechtel of the U.S.; South Korea's Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. Ltd.; Samsung, also of South Korea; and Turkey's TAV.

Construction on the 700,000-square-meter terminal building is due to start in the second quarter next year, with operations due to begin in the first half of 2017, Adac said. The terminal will initially handle 27 million-30 million passengers annually.

Abu Dhabi International Airport is one of the fastest growing airports in the world, with growth rates of 19.7% over the last five years, spurred by rapid growth of Etihad Airways and the increasing attraction of Abu Dhabi as a destination for business and leisure, Adac said.

It added that growth over the next 20 years was forecast to be "robust", with further facilities expected to be needed to meet rising traffic demand.

Abu Dhabi is the largest sheikdom in the United Arab Emirates and holder of almost all the country's oil reserves.
