Abu Dhabi: Consumer prices in Abu Dhabi went up by 2.2 per cent in the five months of this year compared to the same period in 2016 supported by an increase in the prices of housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels.

According to the latest data from Statistics Center Abu Dhabi (Scad), in May alone, consumer prices went up by 2 per cent compared to May 2016.

The average inflation rate during the first five month was 2.16 per cent with March seeing the highest inflation rate of 2.6 per cent.

Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels’ group accounted for the largest rise in the consumer prices during the first five months of 2017, contributing 55.3 per cent to the overall increase in the consumer prices. Prices of this group increased by 3.5 per cent over the same period.

Meanwhile, prices of transport in Abu Dhabi contributed 33.1 per cent to the overall increase in consumer prices for the first five months of 2017, with prices of this category jumping 5.3 per cent year-on-year.

In its report Scad said, Abu Dhabi region contributed 56 per cent of the total increase of 2.2 per cent for the period from January to May 2017, while Al-Ain contributed 38.1 per cent, and Al Dhafra region 5.9 per cent.

The rise in consumer prices for the first five months contributed to an increase of 2.4 per cent in consumer prices for households of the bottom welfare level over the same period of comparison.

Consumer prices rose by 2.6 per cent and 1.9 per cent for households of the middle and the top welfare levels respectively, 2.6 per cent for citizen households, followed by 1.9 per cent for non-citizen households.
