Saudi Arabia’s ambitious Red Sea project will get its new airport as scheduled in 2022, according to the mega project’s developer The Red Sea Company (TRSDC).

TRSDC tweeted on Wednesday that the international airport will be ready to welcome tourists by the end of 2022.

An infographic tweeted by the developer highlighted that to date, 6 million cubic metres of soil has been excavated; 27,000 cubic metres of asphalt have been used to surface the 3.7 km runway and parallel taxiway; 47,000 cubic metres of Crushed Aggregate Base Course have been delivered; 52,000 metres of secondary ducts and 1,000 metres of primary ducts bank have been installed.

Nearly 1,669 workers have spent 2 million work hours while 383 pieces of heavy equipment have been deployed on site to implement the project, according to the infographic.

In July 2020, Zawya had reported that TRSDC had awarded the contract for airside infrastructure works to a joint venture between Saudi contractors Nesma & Partners Contracting Co. and Almabani General Contractors.

The design contract for the airport was awarded to Foster + Partners in October 2019.
