Sharjah: More than 600 students from schools all across the United Arab Emirates participated in the AUS MathFest 2019 held today, Thursday March 14 at American University of Sharjah (AUS) to celebrate the field of mathematics.
Organized by the AUS Office of Enrollment Management in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the day-long event saw students and teachers from 40 Sharakah partner schools taking part in the various quizzes, lectures and poster competitions held during the day. An engaging lecture entitled Mathematics in the Modern World was delivered by Dr. Mohammed Seaid from the University of Durham.
Welcoming the students and teachers to the event, Dr. Mahmoud Anabtawi, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at AUS, said:
“We are very proud to be holding MathFest 2019. This is an important annual event for us as it brings young students from all across the country to our campus to celebrate and explore the wonderful field of mathematics. Here at AUS, our excellent Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a bachelor’s as well as a master’s degree in mathematics. AUS offers a challenging and stimulating academic environment, coupled with a wonderful campus life. As a not-for-profit university, we also offer many scholarship and financial aid opportunities for deserving students and, therefore, I encourage you to apply to AUS.”
Speaking on the occasion, Ali Shuhaimy, Executive Director of Enrollment Management at AUS, said:
"This is yet another wonderful Sharkah event organized by the Office of Enrollment Management in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences. This event aims to provide opportunities for high school students and their teachers to show their talent in mathematics. Moreover, it will expand their knowledge about the subject matter paving the way for students to possibly pursue a major in mathematics as well as introduce their teachers to graduate programs offered at AUS."
Speaking on behalf of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at AUS, Dr. Hana Sulieman said:
“We are delighted to have the opportunity to engage with talented students and teachers to promote mathematical thinking and stimulate their creative problem solving skills. Through excellent degree programs in mathematics, we help our students at AUS to develop decision-making and critical thinking skills that are highly valued by employers across many job sectors including government, industry, IT, consulting firms and many others.”
The event was held as part of the Sharakah program under which AUS has signed Memorandums of Understanding with a number of secondary schools in the UAE whereby the university will offer workshops to teachers and students; offer patronage of selected research, cultural, social and sporting activities and events organized by the Sharakah partner school; award partial scholarships to deserving students selected from lists provided by the schools; and offer university preparation courses, including SAT and TOEFL preparation courses, as well as recruitment of outstanding students from varied sociocultural and economic backgrounds to AUS.
