ALGIERS  -- Algeria has fired into orbit Alcomsat-I communication satellite from China.

Alcomsat-I, with the Algerian flag painted on it, was launched into orbit at 6:40 p.m. GMT, by the Algerian Space Agency (ASAL), in partnership with China, the ASAL said in a press statement Sunday.

It added that the satellite was launched by the Chinese Long March 3B rocket from Xichang Satellite Launch Centre, in Sichuan Province.

The Algerian satellite is used for telecommunications, broadcasting and Internet, it pointed out.
