DUBAI, United Arab Emirates:– A number of high-profile speakers participated on a keynote panel discussion on Day 1 of the second edition of the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS), following a keynote address from Russian Federation President, Vladimir Putin.
The panel looked through the lens of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and focused on the role and function of nature-inspired technologies. Three of the panellists also delivered keynote presentations at the Summit earlier in the day.
H.E. Eng. Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Industry of the United Arab Emirates highlighted that the Fourth Industrial Revolution is transforming the way that people live. Shaping the future of manufacturing with this technology will be a key factor to transform the world economy for the better, he noted. He added that the Summit provides an ideal platform for policy makers and academia to engage with each other, with the ultimate goal of sharing learnings among as many countries as possible.
LI Yong, Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), added that the Fourth Industrial Revolution represents the convergence of manufacturing and digital industries, and pointed to drone technology already being used for precision agriculture and food security. LI Yong further added that the potential positive impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution for mankind cannot be overstated and that GMIS was created to promote this technology within the manufacturing sector.
H.E. Denis Manturov, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, emphasised the Fourth Industrial Revolution is characterised by a focus on digitalisation and artificial intelligence. As all countries embrace a new industrial paradigm, Manturov said, they must embrace the important task of rebuilding the biosphere and the key to this is the introduction of nature-inspired technologies.
H.E. Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Group CEO of Mubadala Investment Company, highlighted that diversification for investment companies is key, pointing out that in their 20 years of operations, the company’s investment portfolio has gone from being 100% focused on the energy sector to under 20% today. He praised the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, and said the UAE leadership placed great emphasis on how the country was diversifying as an economy beyond oil & gas.
The keynote panel also focused on the increased investment in renewable energy and artificial intelligence and the role it plays in automation as well as its potential to have a disruptive impact on how people work. Minister Al Mazrouei mentioned the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 which calls for the diversification of energy sources, with a focus on clean energy. Meanwhile, LI Yong commended the countries in the Middle East for their renewable energy strategies.
Both Minister Manturov and Khaldoon Al Mubarak emphasised the importance of human experience and human abilities in the creation of artificial intelligence. Khaldoon Al Mubarak also reiterated that the human component when it comes to AI is fundamental. He noted that every industry will be impacted dramatically by AI within the next 10 years, and most within five. Companies and industries that embrace this quickly, he said, will be winners.
Speaking about the challenges to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Minister Manturov mentioned protectionism and said that as the minister of industry and trade for the Russian Federation, he is often asked about whether he has a plan B if a new package of sanctions were to be imposed on Russia. While he admitted he could not predict every time the White House would decide to slap sanctions ofon Russia, he said that every time sanctions were imposed the country had to find a way to produce the products. Russia is open and ready to co-operate internationally, he stated, and hoped that common sense would prevail so that there is no more protectionism and unfair competition.
LI Yong concluded by saying that GMIS is a very important forum for advancing the global agenda to transform manufacturing. Driving a dialogue around the role that manufacturers must play to support and advance the SDGs is top of the Summit’s agenda, with special sessions dedicated to exploring ways in which industrial development can help tackle issues such as world poverty and hunger, while safeguarding the environment and ensuring social inclusion.
