Dubai, UAE – On the sidelines of GITEX Technology Week 2018, Dubai Science Park (DSP), a holistic science-focused business community, and the American Middle East Institute (AMEI), a Pittsburgh-based independent non-profit organisation, today announced a high-level conference ‘Dubai 2018: Disruptive Technologies and the Next Economy’.

Set to run on 17 October at Dubai Knowledge Park, the event is the 11th edition of the institute’s annual business conference that will take place in Dubai for the first time. The gathering will convene prominent US and Middle East experts to explore disruptive innovations with a focus on healthcare technologies, energy and high-value manufacturing, robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), and transportation.

Headline speakers include Mitch Lowe, co-founder of Netflix, Bill Peduto, Mayor of Pittsburgh, Kevin Acklin, Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of Peoples Natural Gas, Michael Lordi, Esq., Chief Operating Officer of Elliott Group, Petra Mitchell, President and CEO of Catalyst Connection and Board Member of the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute, Michael Harries, Chief Technology Officer at ARIEL Precision Medicine and Partner at The Robotics Hub, Samir Khalil, Executive Director for Middle East and Africa at PhRMA Fraser Kitchell, Director of Future Missions and Technology at Astrobotic, Aaron Morris, PhD and Co-Founder of Allvision IO, Chris Moehle, Managing Director of Coal Hill Ventures and The Robotics Hub, and Namir Hourani, Managing Director of Global Manufacturing Industrialisation Summit.

Marwan Abdulaziz Janahi, Managing Director of Dubai Science Park, said: “Dubai is an incredible city that is driven by innovation and the embrace of technology. We owe much of our thriving economy and growing population to the government’s agile and flexible approach to adapt technological advancements. Pairing this pioneering approach with DSP’s ability to forge lasting partnerships with local, regional and global stakeholders further facilitates change. Our latest collaboration with our esteemed partners from AMEI is a prime example. We look forward to a through-provoking conference and actionable outcomes.”

Simin Yazdgerdi Curtis, President & CEO of American Middle East Institute, said: "We are proud to bring our tech-focused delegation to Dubai and the UAE, whose youthful population enthusiastically embraces new and transformational technologies that benefit humanity. This is the first time in Pittsburgh's history that a formal delegation has come to Dubai and we are confident that many productive partnerships will result. The American Middle East Institute believes in the power of friendship and trust, and we look forward to welcoming an Emirati delegation to Pittsburgh in the near future. We thank TECOM Group and Dubai Science Park for sharing their expertise and partnering with us to make this conference possible.”

Mitch Lowe, Founding Executive of Netflix, said: “I’m thrilled to be part of this extraordinary conversation in Dubai. Like many organisations in its class, the American Middle East Institute is building bridges between leading economic disruptors in the United States and the Middle East. This conference is happening in the right place and at the right time, and I'm honored to be part of it.”

Dubai and Pittsburgh have made remarkable strides in leveraging available technologies to increase efficiencies across organisations and industry sectors, radically rethinking how economies are run.

The Government of Dubai has long been a keen advocate of the implementation of innovative technologies. The Dubai 10X initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aspires to position Dubai 10 years ahead of other global cities through calling on 36 government institutions and private sector organisations, including TECOM Group, to embrace disruptive technologies. Over the past year, participating entities were encouraged to set up ‘X-Units’ tasked with trialling and scaling relevant structures, systems and technologies.

Pittsburgh, home to Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute and Uber’s AI hub that focuses on self-driving cars, is making waves in the practical implementation of technologies that will transform the global economy in the years to come. Meanwhile, AMEI facilitates dialogue and provides a platform for the exchange of knowledge in innovation between the US, the UAE and the wider Middle East region, with previous events featuring royalty and such well-known U.S. figures as Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and many others.

The joint conference is the latest in a series of annual industry events organised by Dubai Science Park in collaboration with strategic partners. Upcoming events include the Advance Health Conference on 25th October and the 10th Green Leadership Series, a forum dedicated to the transition towards a low-carbon and sustainable Dubai, set to take place on 6 November.
