Dubai, UAE: Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry successfully concluded the eighth cycle of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award, by honouring 20 companies during an award ceremony held at the Madinat Jumeirah Arena in Dubai yesterday (Wednesday).

The high profile award ceremony was attended by H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Department of Civil Aviation, CEO and Chairman of The Emirates Group and Chairman of Dubai World, and a large number of Ministers, heads of Government departments, dignitaries, Board members of Dubai Chamber, representatives of business councils and groups, a large number of businessmen and members of the media.

The winners of the eighth cycle of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award coming from a cross-section of business establishments were honoured for their exceptional performance in fostering growth and innovation and a culture of excellence in the country and the region.

The Award in the Finance category went to Emirates NBD, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Union National Bank and Sharjah Islamic Bank.

The Award in the Services category were presented to World Security, , du-Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company, RAK Hospital, and British Orchard Nursery.

The Trade category Awards were presented to Arabian Automobiles Co. L.L.C., Union Cooperative Society, EPPCO Lubricants, and Aster Pharmacy Group L.L.C.,

Awards in the Manufacturing category were presented to Drydocks World - Dubai, and Kimoha Entrepreneurs Ltd.

The Award in the Transport and Logistics category was received by School Transport Services LLC while the Award in the Construction category was received by NPCC - National Petroleum Construction Company.

The GCC companies receiving the awards were Saudi Arabia-based KiCE Manufacturing as well as Bahrain-based Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company in the Manufacturing category, and Oman-based Gulf Energy SAOC and Saudi Arabia's Innovative Solutions in the Services category.

The Most Outstanding Performance Award for the year 2014 in UAE went to Arabian Automobiles Co. L.L.C. whereas the Most Outstanding Performance Award for the year 2014 in the GCC went to Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company in Bahrain.

A special recognition trophy was presented to H.E. Abdul Rahman Saif Al Ghurair, Chairman, Dubai Chamber, for his valuable contribution to Dubai's business community.

In his welcome address, H.E. Majed Al Shamsi, 1st Vice-Chairman, Dubai Chamber, stated that the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award is not just an award for honouring outstanding companies but it is an integral part of an intensive qualification programme based on international best business practices and includes seminars and training workshops, and a club for exchange of business performance strategies, processes, operations and performance results according to the latest concepts.

Al Shamsi further stressed that the award allows the participants to obtain an organisational learning experience through self-assessment and comparison with best global business practices as well as by providing them a detailed report about their overall performance including their strengths and weaknesses.

"The award is not limited to honouring outstanding companies but it also helps them develop their overall performance and competitiveness in the marketplace which ultimately reflects on the sustainable economic growth of the emirate," he said.

Expressing his delight with the participation in this eighth cycle of the award, H.E. Al Shamsi said that 80% of the pool of participants are new representing 56 sectors particularly the predominant sectors of manufacturing, service, trade, construction and finance.

The 1st Vice-Chairman of Dubai Chamber pointed out that the excellence award has attracted 27% of participants from the neighbouring countries after opening the doors for GCC participation as the Chamber is spearheading the GCC's march in the area of innovation and creativity towards a unified economic growth of the entire region.

He further stated that the award, since its inception, has honoured 129 companies from various economic sectors in the UAE and has now taken GCC companies into its fold before becoming an international award by 2020.

In his keynote address, H.E. Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, UAE Minister of Economy, and Chairman of the Panel of Judges of the Award, said that he is witness to the growing importance of the excellence award which has kept pace with the latest trends in global best business excellence practices by adopting new standards in evaluation practices. This has ultimately contributed to the strengthening of the status of the award and its reputation as a catalyst of institutional performance in the UAE and the Gulf region.

H.E. Al Mansouri pointed out that the award in its current cycle has registered a 12.5% growth ​​in the number of participating companies compared to its previous cycles thus bringing the number of companies over the past eight cycles to more than 1,200 which reflects on the award's reputation as a tool of excellence in institutional performance and success.

Added Al Mansouri: "Today, it gives me immense pleasure in announcing the launch of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Innovation Award, an initiative of the Ministry of Economy in cooperation with Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This initiative is within the framework of the declaration of the year 2015 as the UAE Year of Innovation under the wise guidance of President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and also in line with the innovation strategy, launched by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed last October."

Stressing on the success of the UAE's business environment on creativity and innovation, H.E. Al Mansouri called upon all companies in the country and the entire GCC region to keep reinventing themselves with outstanding performance and offering of world-class services while enhancing their competitiveness in the global market.

H.E. Hamad Buamim, President and CEO of Dubai Chamber and Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Award, informed that the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award has been spreading a culture of excellence in the UAE for many years, and is now doing so across the GCC.

"On its part, Dubai Chamber is launching two new major initiatives to lead innovation growth in the emirate including the Dubai Private Sector Innovation Index which is a first-of-its-kind in the world and will measure Dubai's progress in becoming the world's most innovative city.

"The second one is the Dubai Chamber Innovation Strategy Framework that will lead our contribution to the national innovation strategy. This framework will be the first outside the US and will provide a benchmarking tool against other countries and a roadmap for future implementation," said H.E. Buamim.

The President and CEO of Dubai Chamber said that innovation is a key performance area in the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award. Therefore, the launch of new innovation strategy by the Chamber is part of its commitment to enhance the competitiveness of the business community while strengthening the emirate's position offering a fertile ground for innovation and creativity.

The five-member jury panel, headed by H.E. Al Mansouri, included H.E. Mohamed Thani Murshed Al Rumaithi, Chairman, Federation of UAE Chambers of Commerce & Industry, H.E. Sheikh Saif Bin Hashil Al Maskery, Former Member of State Council, Sultanate of Oman, Mr. Fadi F. Farra, Co-Founder & Partner, Whiteshield Partners, and Mr. Ang Hak Seng, Chairman of the Singapore Quality Award Management Committee, and Member of the Singapore Quality Award Governing Council.

Held annually under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the prestigious award's Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Performance Program encourages companies to adopt global best practices and improve their performance. The award is the winner of the Dubai Government Excellence Programme for the 'Best Administrative Initiative' in 2007.
