Iraq is waiting for Chinese companies to make bids for the construction of 1,000 schools within plans approved by the cabinet to construct at least 7,000 schools across the Arab country, the official Alsabah daily said on Thursday.

The state-owned National Centre for Engineering Consulting has prepared the design for the schools while various governorates have already allocated land for the project, the paper said, quoting Cabinet Secretariat spokesman Haidar Majeed.

Majeed said Chinese firms have expressed interest in building 1,000 schools and that the Secretariat is “awaiting bids from those companies.”

“We will choose the best bids offered by various Chinese firms for the construction of 1,000 schools…they are part of a national programme to construct over 7,000 schools in various governorates in the next few years,” he said.
