Dubai: “On the occasion of International Women’s Day, themed ‘I am Generation Equality: Realising Women's Rights,’ we are proud of our wise leadership that supports women and places gender balance among its top priorities. This has helped the UAE achieve the first rank regionally and 26th globally in the Gender Inequality Index (GII) of the UN Development Programme 2019. Supporting women in the UAE has ensured considerable progress, guided by the late Founding Father Sheikh Zayed’s approach, and supported by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE; and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's  Union, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood (Mother of the Nation). This is in addition to the laws and policies that implement the UAE’s constitution, which states equality and opportunities for all. Hosting the Global Women’s Forum – Dubai 2020 in Dubai, supported by DEWA as the Strategic Sustainability Partner, highlights the global position of the UAE in this area,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“DEWA is one of the leading government organisations in empowering society through women. It provides a supportive and inspiring work environment for all its female employees, who represent more than 40 different nationalities. DEWA employs 1,933 female staff, 80% being Emiratis. DEWA was one of the first government organisations to create a women’s committee and childcare centres for its female employees’ children. It also provides flexible working hours and unique training opportunities as well as educational scholarships to engage women fully. DEWA’s female employees participate in different volunteering activities inside and outside the UAE. Their total volunteering hours were over 13,300 hours last year in 40 humanitarian and social initiatives. 80% of the team working in conservation and social responsibility are women. Every day, Emirati female employees play a pivotal role in DEWA’s prestigious global position and prove their competence and merit in all divisions,” added Al Tayer.
