Riffa, Bahrain)- The American University of Bahrain (AUBH) welcomed Dr. Tamela H. Hawley, Vice President at WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), to Bahrain. Dr. Hawley visited the University’s state-of-the-art campus, as the institution is in the process of seeking U.S. Regional Accreditation and on June 3rd, 2021 achieved eligibility to proceed with an Application for Accreditation with WSCUC. Together with AUBH’s Founding President, Dr. Susan E. Saxton and Accreditation Liaison Officer, Dr. Wafa Al Mansoori; Dr. Hawley met with the community to explore the creation of models for international institutions in Bahrain and MENA, to engage with global best practices that are student-centered and employment-focused, in addition to progressive ways to retain the consultative approach to accreditation while ensuring sustainability.
During her visit, Dr. Hawley met with AUBH’s Boards, leadership, faculty, staff, and Student Council, to guide the University’s community through the accreditation process. She was introduced to key Bahraini constituents, including H.E. Dr. Shaikha Rana, Secretary General of the Higher Education Council; Dr. Jawaher Shaheen Al Mudhahki, Chief Executive of the Education & Training Quality Authority (BQA); representing Bahrain’s higher education sector. Dr. Hawley then met with Dr. May bint Sulaiman Al Otaibi, Executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors & Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of The Bahrain Bayan School (BBS); and Dr. Kamal Abdel-Nour, President of the Ibn Khuldoon National School (IKNS), representing the K-12 sector.
WSCUC’s VP was also introduced to key community stakeholders including H.E. Mr. Khalid Al Rumaihi, Chief Executive Officer of the Mumtalakat Holding Company; H.E. Ms. Maggie Nardi, Charge d’Affaires, U.S. Embassy in Bahrain; and Ms. Mary McGinnis, Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham). Together, they discussed Bahrain’s rapidly evolving landscape post-Covid, and the Kingdom’s strategic and long-standing relationship with the U.S.

Her visit also supports our Vision of becoming the hub for American-style education in the region, not only creating global pathways for our students but also presenting a sustainable model to universities in the Region for U.S. regional accreditation.”
U.S. Regional accreditation recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), hold the highest level of quality assurance at the institutional level in the U.S. The accreditation process usually takes five years and is guided by 16 rigorous Eligibility criteria. Those include a “First Seeking Accreditation Visit” (SAV), during which the WSCUC Commission will fly to Bahrain, and visit the American-style University to inspect the state-of-the-art campus.

AUBH is proud to be licensed by the Higher Education Council of the Ministry of Education of Bahrain. On June 3rd, 2021, a WSCUC panel reviewed the appropriate Eligibility criteria and determined that the institution is eligible to proceed with an Application for Accreditation. A determination of Eligibility is not a formal status with the WASC Senior College and University Commission, nor does it ensure eventual accreditation. It is a preliminary finding that the institution is potentially accreditable and can proceed within five years of its Eligibility determination to be reviewed for Candidacy or Initial Accreditation status with the Commission.
