Riyadh: More than 200,000 Saudi citizens registered in the Middle East ride-hailing app Careem to work as captains, including 2,000 women, since the oil-rich kingdom had lifted the decades-long ban on women driving in June 2017.

Female drivers of Careem are distributed in the Saudi cities of Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam, and a small number of them are in the remaining cities, an official in Careem told local newspaper Aleqtisadiah.

The UAE-based ride-hailing firm is seeking to raise the number of Saudi female drivers to 20,000 by 2020, the official added.

In 2017, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz issued a decree that allowed Saudi females to start driving, and the decision came into effect on 24 June 2018.
